Kanebo KATE Lipgloss S Swatches

KATE is the drugstore arm of Kanebo cosmetics, the ever-popular Japan-based cosmetics and skincare brand. KATE has been gaining popularity among Asian girls as it is often perceived as being similar to Kanebo, it's more expensive sister, but at a better price point. That, combined with the cutesey marketing and the "it's-from-Japan" hype, has garnered it something of a small following.

One of KATE's latest products is the Lipgloss S, consisting of just five colours. I have to admit, Asian cosmetics naming conventions are so odd that although I'm Asian myself, I've no idea what S stands for. Shine? Shimmer? Sheer? Sticky? Well, the Lipgloss S is all of those, so I guess they picked the letter quite rightly. Anyway, enough of my snark, here are the Lipgloss S swatches.



L - R: PK-2, BE-1, PK-1, BR-1, RD-1

In general, Asian cosmetics naming conventions for lip shades go as such:
PK = Pink
BE = Beige
BR = Brown (although oftentimes in Asian cosmetics "brown" really looks more like "pinky-brown-that's-not-pastel")
RD = Red
PP = Purple (once again, not as purple as it sounds, it's usually used for plummy shades)

And the 1, 2, 3 etc numbers usually denote depth or darkness of colour. So, say PK-1 and PK-2 would be both pinks, but PK-2 could be reasonably be expected to be darker than PK-1. Which in itself isn't saying much, because you know, darker could be one shade darker, or three shades darker, and there is huge variance in shade depth between shades.

Anyway, here's my colour description below:

PK-2 is a pale, purply-pink with big chunk of glitter.
BE-1 is a pale, sheer, peach with glitter.
PK-1 is a pale, pastel pink, that's not as purply as PK-2, and also has glitter.
BR-1 isn't as brown as the colour naming scheme makes it sound. It's actually a gorgeous neutral pinky-brown, a lovely MLBB (My Lips But Better) shade.
RD-1 is the lone shimmer-free shade in the range. It's a sheer red, perfect for girls who want an introduction to the red lip.

As I've mentioned previously, all these glosses are sheer, have copious amounts of shimmer, and are really, really sticky. Like, Lancome Juicy Tubes kind of sticky (and if you're a makeup fanatic like me, you'll know the Juicy Tubes are famed for being possibly one of the stickiest glosses ever to have touched the lips of womankind). As it tends to be with Asian cosmetics, the lighter shades tend to be sheerer and have more shimmer, while the darker shades tend to have better pigmentation and be less glitterbomb-ish.

BeautyUK Lip Lust in St Tropez: Summer Hotness for Lips!

Now that Summer is officially here, all of us are looking for quick, cheap, easilly available Summer pick-me-ups - you know, that cheap and awesome bronzer, that great teal eyeliner, or - in the case of BeautyUK's newer range of lipglosses, the Lip Lusts, the perfect bronzey, shimmery lip. I have to admit, bronze generally isn't a colour I'd wear on my lips, but BeautyUK's Lip Lust in St Tropez looked so hot, I was sorely tempted to give it a go!



The Lip Lusts come packaged in a small, slim squeeze tube with a black cap. Pretty normal, as far as lip glosses go. The applicator, though, is a fuzzy slant tube, which isn't that common.



If I were brutally honest, I'd say I didn't really like these types of applicators - fuzzy tips, brush applicators, etc - because they do tend to get all gunked up with product and clogged up after some usage, and they aren't the most hygenic way of applying the product to your lips. Fortunately, if you're a lipgloss-germaphobe like me, there's a very neat way of getting around this issue.



Yup, you saw correctly! Simply twist off the fuzzy applicator cap, and use a lip brush! The applicator is simply screwed on by a cap, so you can just twist it off!

The St Tropez Lip Lust is packed full with shimmer, so for those girls who prefer shimmer-less glosses, you have been warned. There are small gold and silver glitter bits, which I think go very well with the bronzey, summery feel of the lipgloss - St Tropez is such an evocative colour name isn't it?



Still, although it's glitter-heavy, the glitter isn't too overpowering, because some of the glitter is hidden in the pigmentation of the gloss. BeautyUK advertises the Lip Lusts as being very pigmented, and they are right. What I love about the colour of the gloss is that althought it's bronze-ish, it's not totally unwearable - I'd call it red-bronze, so it doesn't look like you're applying metal foil to your lips. It still looks like the colour of actual lips, just with a bronzey, shimmery tinge.



Here is a shot of the gloss on my lips. Once applied, the Lip Lusts have this tingly, menthol-ish feeling on your lips, which could be a good or bad thing depending on your preferences. Personally, I'd rather not have the tingling sensation, but as long as it doesn't burn I'm indifferent. They're also not too sticky, which is a plus point.



So if you're looking for a cheap, summery gloss with oodles of shimmer, this is definitely worth checking out. With good pigmentation, good texture, and the very cheap price point of £2.99, you could get one of every colour.

Jelly Pong Pong Lavish Gift Bag: Jelly Flush and Lip Frosting

Jelly Pong Pong has got to be one of the cutest brands I've ever seen in my entire life. Everything about this brand is nothing short of adorable - from the packaging to the way the products smell. What's more, the brand has recently released not one, but two gift bags, called the Lavish Gift Bags.

The two gift bags are called Gift Bag A and Gift Bag B respectively, and each of them are £15 each. (PS. for my Asian girls, there is a Malaysian Jelly Pong Pong site that ships closer to home!) Gift Bag A consists of their Brazilian Sun Bronzer as well as a Lip Frosting, while Gift Bag B consists of their cheek tint Jelly Flush, and a Wide Awake Palette (consisting of various highlighters and an eyebrow powder). I'm just going to start the review with my favourite products from each set.

You know I'm a lip and cheek product junkie, so of course I'd fall for the Jelly Flush cheek stain (from set B) and Lip Frosting lipgloss (from set A)! Just look at the packaging of those items!



Now I'm not normally a packaging kinda girl, but they have the cutest-looking tubes and containers. And they both smell really sweet and yummy! Both items are actually quite sizable. I don't think I'd finish either product in my lifetime (but then again, I do have a lot of makeup lying around).



The Lip Frosting is a rather large, stubby tube of lipgloss. I don't think it's completely full of glos, though. It's just the way the product is packaged. You get 14g, which is about the size of a Lancome Juicy Tube. So yes, you do get a good amount of product, but not as much as the fat tube suggests.

It smells very sugary and sweet, and just generally very edible. The Lip Frostings come in various scents and colours, and the one in the set is Irish Cream Pavlova, and is a sheer hot pink with slight glitter.



The Lip Frostings come in a squeeze tube, which then probably has to be transferred to fingers before application on the lip. I do find that you have to be careful with these, sometimes I get quite a bit of gloss gushing out all at once. Otherwise, I don't have any issues with the packaging.

Colour-wise, I love this colour. It's a wearable hot pink, very perfect for Spring/Summer. There are glitter bits inside, but they aren't very big or plentiful, so this is still within my glitter-phobic limits. It's the colour anyone could wear if they wanted a pop of colour on their lips.



The Jelly Pong Pong Jelly Flush cheek stain is also one of the brand's better selling products, and boy, this baby is absolutely adorable. It comes in the cutest little tube with a twist-off cap and a pop-up base.

I do have an issue with the base, though. It seems like you can push up the product, but you can't retract it, except by manually pushing the product down to the base again. I guess with this product, you wouldn't want to push it out unnecessarily.



That said, I'm in love with this product. It smells divine and just edible - this one smells like candies and sweets, and the sheer rosy red colour is perfect for anyone to wear. After all, who couldn't use a sheer red cheek colour?

The texture of this is also a selling point - it gives a wash of a sheer stain of colour, similar to Benetint, but it is in solid form, making it infinitely easier to carry around and use. I'd call this product a solid gel. It isn't all wiggly and squishy like a jelly, but at the same time it isn't very hard, and if you rub it against your skin, the product comes off in a wet, liquid-ish form, which is goood for blending in.



But enough of my ravings and rantings on the products. Here are swatches!

As you can see, the Jelly Flush is very, very sheer. On the first couple of swipes, the product barely shows up at all, and you have to do 3-4 swipes to get a medium application. I had to really build up the heavy swatch you see in the photo above. So if you are unsure about trying out a cheek stain, this one is perfect for beginners - it's in solid form, it's easy to use, and it's very sheer and buildable, so you wont' have to worry about making mistakes.

I also think the Jelly Flush, with it's sheer red stain, would be gorgeous as a lip colour as well. I used it as a lip colour to good effect, although I felt it was a bit dry on its own, so if you were to use it as a lip stain, I'd recommend using a balm or gloss on top.

The Lip Frosting is hot pink, to be sure, but it's also quite sheer. So no worries about the bright colour looking out of place! It's also very shiny, which would appeal to those who love their glosses with shine and glitter.

And because these are my favourite products, here's a Face of the Day (FOTD) I did with these two products. The Jelly Flush is used on my cheeks, and the Lip Frosting is on my lips:



As you can tell, I really love these products, and if these are colours and products that interest you, they are worth a look. In particular, I think the Jelly Flush cheek stain is pretty nifty for people looking for a non-liquid alternative to stains like Benefit's Benetint or TheBalm's Stainiac, since it gives a similar effect. These are wearable and pretty products, and very suitable as cute-looking gifts as well.

Superdrug MUA Lipgloss Shade 4: Cheap and Awesome!

Superdrug MUA (the MUA stands for Makeup Artist) is a line of makeup launched by Superdrug, the eponymous drugstore line. The main attraction of the makeup line is that all its items are just £1. Yup, everything is just a quid! Of course, this means that there are hits and misses - some items are great, some are not so good. Here's one that I think is fantastic.

Introducing the Superdrug MUA Lipgloss in Shade 4. I picked up this little gloss when I stepped into Superdrug for a quick browse and got tempted. The Superdrug MUA line actually has two ranges of lipgloss, both called Lipgloss, but the colours in each line are different. The packaging is also different - one of the glosses comes in a squeeze tube, the other one, which I bought, comes in a hard plastic tube with a wand applicator.

Here's the gloss that I bought. I wasn't impressed by the other shades I swatched, but I did like Shade 4. so I ended up buying it!



Here's a swatch of the gloss. Unlike the other glosses, which were just very sheer and glitter-laden, Shade 4 actually is a colour I really like. It's a deep rosy pink with fine gold shimmer. Very wearable, and very flattering on almost all skintones! Pigmentation was also very good, unlike the rest of the Superdrug MUA lipglosses. As you can see, my skin doesn't even show through.



And here's a swatch of it on my lips. The gold shimmer doesn't really show up on my lips, but it imparts some subtlety of colour that I really like. It would be suitable even for work.



So that's my cheap and awesome find of the day! I certainy hope I'll be finding more gems like this!

Benefit Ultra Shine Lipgloss Swatch/Review/FOTD

Benefit recently released their Ultra Shine Lip Gloss this year, and you know that I can't resist a lipgloss, right? So of course when I heard all the raves for this one, I just had to try it out!



The glosses are billed as being the ultimate shiny gloss, and I think they might just be right. These really are pretty shiny! They come in the usual Benefit black-and-white designed box, and come in small but chubby tubes with a brush applicator.

The two glosses I tried were Who Are You Wearing? and the hilariously-named Patootie. Benefit's definitely got a sense of humour!



Here are swatches of the glosses. As you can see from the swatches, both of them are heavy on shine, but are slightly sheer in terms of pigmentation. Although Who Are You Wearing? looks like it could be quite a bright pink in the tube, it's actually more wearable than it looks, since it lets the natural lip colour show through.

Patootie is a very pearly, almost bordering on frosty, nude pink. I'd call it oyster pink or shell pink. Very pretty if you like that kind of shade.

Who Are You Wearing? is a midtone purple-pink with sparse, very tiny glitter bits. You can't really see the glitter once it's on.

Here are lip glosses swatched on my lips. First up, here's Patootie:



Like I mentioned earlier, it's more of a nude kind of shade - perfect for pairing with smokey eyes! It's also not as sheer as it looks - if you used a bit more of this one, you would actually blank out some of your natural lip colour.

And here's Who Are You Wearing?, which is my favourite out of the two. I love this colour because it adds a bit of pop to your lip, without being too unwearable. I think this is one of those "go with anything" lip colours, because it's just so versatile!



The Ultra Shines also have a very nice, light, and non-sticky texture, and a smell that is vaguely fruity. In fact, the texture and the smell reminds me a lot of the YSL Gloss Pur range, which I've featured in this post before. The nice, light-but-not-too-fluid texture and the smell are actually pretty similar! The difference is that the YSL Gloss Pur is more strongly scented, and also more pigmented. But when it comes to texture, they're remarkably similar.

Here's a FOTD with my new favourite gloss, Who Are You Wearing? As you can probably tell, I'm really loving this gloss. It goes so well with two of my other staples - taupe eyeshadow and plummy-pinky blush!



These are definitely one of the highlights of Benefit's recent releases (other than Bella Bamba, which I also love). The quality is good, and the shade range is also excellent - there aren't any colours in there that I feel are unwearable, and most of these shades look like they would go with almost anything. If you're on the market for a non-sticky lipgloss with decent staying power and medium pigmentation, these are worth checking out!

Zuii Organics Floral Lip Tint in Hibiscus: Wearable Red Gloss

Looks like the term "mineral makeup" is now officially passe with the rise of organic and natural makeup and skincare brands. There are plenty of natural skincare brands (Liz Earle being one I'm more familiar with, although there are others), but I have rarely come across a natural or organic makeup line I wasn't skeptical of, because every other brand seems to throw out the "organic" label on its products, even when the ingredients list clearly shows otherwise.

However, I'm convinced by Zuii Organics. The brand hails from Australia, and is still owned by one lady. And the best part? It's the only makeup brand I've ever seen to be Certified 95% Organic by the USDA, and the Australian government, so it's got all the credentials to back it up. It's even certified cruelty-free, although that's pretty much a no-brainer, seeing how almost all its ingredients are plant derived.



The ingredients lists of Zuii Organics also makes for very interesting reading. You know I love reading my ingredients labels due to my over-sensitive skin, and for Zuii Organics, the ingredients aren't pore-clogging or comedogenic. Mostly, as I've mentioned, they're plant-based ingredients, and the usage of these ingredients is pretty creative - they use coconut oil, rose hip oil, and orange oil in their lip glosses, and the petals of various flowers (rose, jasmin, chamomile) for their eyeshadows. For a cosmetics-ingredients freak like me, this is all very fascinating.



Alright, you say. So the brand is certified organic by two governments, is cruelty-free, and has an ingredients list reading like a botanical essential oils shop. But is it any good? I thought this post was about lipgloss!

Okay, let me get down to the lipgloss. They're called Floral Lip Tints due to the plant oils in the product, and the shade I have is Hibiscus, a gorgeous slightly red with gold glitter. The Floral Lip Tints comes in a tube with a doe-foot applicator. It's quite similar to the normal lipglosses out there in terms of packaging.



Hibiscus is a red that leans warm, but isn't so warmtoned that cool-toned girls can't wear it. In fact, I've enjoyed wearing this gloss very much, and on me it's pretty neutral - no weird orange undertones at all. Also, there is some gold glitter in the lipgloss, but while it consists of discrete specks of glitter, it doesn't look like a glitterbomb on my lips at all. I really do appreciate glitter in moderation when it comes to makeup, since a little glitter goes a long way.

The best thing about the lipgloss is that although it's red, it's actually very wearable, because the colour of the gloss is slightly sheer. As you can see, the gloss can be worn sheerly, or more heavily. When it's worn sheerly, the base colour of the lip clearly shows through, and all you get is a little bit of red and some glitter. When it's worn more heavily, it starts looking a bit more like a traditional red lip gloss, with awesome gold shimmer thrown in.

And here is the lipgloss on my lips. As you can see, it's red, but it's not "OMG BIG RED LIP!" Very wearable, and perfectly fine for the office, even if you're colour-shy.



The Lip Tints have a very nice non-sticky texture, due to the fact that they're formulated mainly using plant oils, as opposed to heavier waxes. The feel on the lips is light, fluid, and not tacky at all, while still being very moisturizing. I could see some people thinking that the glosses are too wet or slippery, but I personally really like the feel of these glosses.

Lasting power is also pretty decent. It isn't as long-lasting as a waxier, more sticky gloss might be, but given the formulation, I think it does a good job. It stays on for a few hours on me, and the colour fades a little bit by that time.

And because I love Hibiscus so much, I've even devoted an FOTD (face of the day) just to show you how pretty and wearable it is. I love how it gives some shine, and a bit of red colour, and the glitter doesn't show up in a distracting way on the lip.



Please forgive the straggly hair, I took that FOTD just after a shower, and my hair was still pretty damp. I'm also wearing Zuii Organics eyeshadows on my eyes, but you can't see too much of the colour from this photo, so I'll be reviewing the shadows in a separate post.

So would I recommend these Lip Tints? If you've been searching for a line of organic makeup, this is pretty much THE brand to look at - they're the only brand I've seen to actually be certified organic by a regulatory body. But even if you don't particularly care whether your makeup is organic or not (like me), these are still worth looking into if you like lipglosses that are light and moisturizing, and offer a hint of colour.

Lancome Maqui Miracle Foundation Swatches and Spring Sneak Peek!

Here's a sneak peak at Lancome Spring 2011! Aren't you excited? I sure am! They do have some pretty darn awesome stuff coming up, and I have some exciting swatches and pictures! Prepare for bombardment!

First up of course is the much anticpated Maqui Miracle Natural Brightening Creator Compact Foundation, which imparts a smooth finish and a lit-from-within aura glow. It launches in Singapore on March 1st (book your calendars, ladies!) and will be retailing for S$65 (the case is another S$27).

When they say that the foundation glows from within, they weren't kidding! Although the foundation promises to impart radiance to tired complexions, there's not a trace of glitter in this foundation, so you don't have to worry about looking like a glitterbomb exploded in your face.



Maqui Miracle foundation comes in 8 shades, and like Teint Miracle before it, the shades are very nuanced and actually look like the skin colours of people I know. So many brands make the grevious mistake of thinking that warm-toned foundations have to be hidiously orange, and cool-toned foundations need to have barbie pink thrown in. Lancome, however, has managed to come out with nuanced shades that still reflect cool, neutral, and warm undertones, without ever veering to a pink or orange extreme. That is a pretty big plus in my book!

For those wondering about how the Lancome numbering system of shades works in Asian countries, this was clarified at the event. PO colours are geared towards pinker undertones (cooler undertones), while O colours are neutral. BO are yellower colours for warmer undertones. Simple!

Here are some product pictures of the pans, along with swatches taken by yours truly. I hope they help some of you ladies out there in matching yourselves!

Here are the 3 lightest shades: PO-01, O-01, and BO-01:





As you can see, the shades gradiate from being more pink to less pink as we move from PO-O1 to BO-01.

It's more apparent with the medium set of shades, PO-02, O-02, and BO-02:





Strangely enough, although I'm NC20, I matched myself to O-01, which wasn't what I thought when I took a look at the shades at a first glance. I had expected that I would be BO-01, but O-01 was a much better fit. I think most Asian girls would probably be wearing shades in the O and BO range.

In additon to the colour selection, I also really liked the texture of the Maqui Miracle Foundation. It was very finely milled, and went on very smoothly. And it didn't settle into creases and lines, which is a bonus. I'll definitely be reviewing the foundation soon, so you'll hear more about it!

Next, we have the colour makeup items, which excite me greatly. First up are the lipglosses, the L’Absolu Rouge Crème de Brillance. We're getting in three shades, 180, 285 and 320. Here's a sneak peek at the lipglosses:



The glosses have a very nice non-sticky texture, and aren't full-coverage, but they definitely aren't sheer either, and even the red shade is very wearable. So for anyone looking for a wearable red lipgloss, 180 is totally worth checking out.

Here's a swatch of both 320 and 180:



320 is a creamy mauve pink, while 180 is a semi-sheer red with tiny bits of sparkle. You can't really see it in the swatches, but the sparkle is there.

After the glosses, of course we have the L’Absolu Rouge lipsticks. I personaly love Lancome lipsticks, so you know I'm going to love these:



The lipsticks are also semi-sheer. So although the red lipstick looks scary in the tube, it is also very wearable once applied. The texture of the lipstick was also great - they glided on, and weren't drying at all. And as you can see from the swatches below, they have a very nice sheen when applied. I love how the lipsticks look on, they kind of just glow a little.



285 is a muted midtone neutral pink, and 180 is a sheerish red that is very wearable. Both of these shades are the kind of universally flattering shade every girl needs in her makeup collection. These colours would go with just about any outfit or any makeup look since they're pretty neutral.

Lancome Juicy Tubes Review

Happy New Year!!! Hope you all had a lovely holiday! 

I've heard so much about Lancome's juicy tubes, and wanted to try them out for myself. I got this set of mini tubes for Christmas, they are so handy to pop into your purse and has 4 pretty colours.

These mini Lancome juicy tube lipglosses are so glittery- perfect for going out! They smell quite strong, especially the Toffee and Marshmallow. Don't get me wrong, I do like nice smelling lipglosses, in fact they make it more appealing, however these 2 particular ones smelled sickeningly sweet. Lets just say it wasn't the kind of smell that made you want to lick your lips, more of; instead-of-eating-my-sweets-I-smothered-my-lips-in-it. Fraise and Lychee smelled very nice though, I guess it's just a matter of personal taste.

(+) The colours are all use-able, I had a doubt about Toffee, but the colour is actually quite nice.

(+) The glitter is not over the top, I hate to be cheesy but it does make your lips look "juicy" and luscious.

(+) The smell of Fraise and Lychee is very delicious!

(-) It's so sticky!! I know glosses tend to be, but these are really sticky. 

(-) I don't like the overpowering smell of Toffee and Marshmallow, but after a while you do notice it less

(-) The gloss is a b*tch to clean off!! The glitter just gets everywhere!

Overall I would rate it 3/5, not something that is needed, but nice to have.

Mini Christmas haul & Shu Uemura Cleanser review

Hi everyone!

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas! I think i ate way too much chocolate and food, argh which means i'll have to do a lot of exercise to burn off all the fat! There is still one more day until New years, but i know some of you are from Australia etc. so it will be tomorrow for you , so Happy 2011 to you guys!!! 

I won't be posting a New Years resolution as i never really stick to it, especially when it concerns: eat healthy, drink more water and exercise! Plus i think i say the same thing every year anyways! But i do look forward to reading yours!

By the way, I know I should have said this sooner but i do notice new followers (hello, welcome, welcome!) I always try to check out your blogs too, but sometimes it doesn't work, so if you could kindly leave your blog URL and so i can stalk- i mean check out your blogs too! =)

Shu Uemura skin purifier, it's limited edition (i think i might buy another one)

It comes with a card instruction, thank God for that! I would have used it all wrong! So basically you need dry hands and face for this, pump 3-4 times of the purifier and rub it onto your face, then add a little water so it foams up, then rinse it off.

What it does:

My Verdict:

(+) It leaves my skin really soft and i do see a slight difference in my skin, it looks cleaner and my pours look clearer. I've only used it for a week, but so far so good!

(+) It removes my make-up  really well, even water-proof mascara. M skin feels more balanced and it doesn't leave my skin oily at all.

(+) Packaging is quite unique, i love the picture

(-) It smells like tea tree oil, i'm not a fan of that smell, but it's bearable i guess

(-) I don't like the fact that my hands and face has to be dry to use this because i use it after brushing my teeth and i have to make an effort to dry my hands off to apply it.

(-) It runs out so quicklyyyy! I've limited myself to 2pumps per use now in order to reserve it!

I was a little sceptical at first as it was an oil and i have a combination of oily and dry skin (i have dry patches) and i thought the cleanser would make me breakout and add more oil to my skin, but surprisingly it didn't and it left my skin moisturised and soft. I definitely recommend this!  5/5

I also received two samples of white recovery cleansers, i think i'll give one away if it's good =)

This is such a cool gadget! I kept seeing it on Youtube and  thought i'd give it a try. It's really simple to use, and really handy. I'm really tempted to go into a perfume shop and fill it up with their perfume, would that be stealing?

Artistry Lipgloss

Oh yeah, i got a new haircut, i don't really like my fringe so you won't be seeing much of my hair for a while!

I applied Dior lipstick in 254 X-Mauve then the Artistry gloss on top.
