Rock and Republic Spank vs Stila Bud Blush: Dupes or Not?

While plumbing the depths of my makeup stash, I noticed that two of my blushes looked eerily familiar. One was a blush I've raved about before, Rock and Republic's Spank, and the other was Stila's Bud blush, which I had and liked at one point in time, but forgot I had over the years. Oops.

Both appear identical in the pan, and to be sure, they are from the same colour family - both are muted, everyday, go-with-everything neutral pinks.

Rock Republic Spank Stila Bud

L-R: Rock and Republic Spank, Stila Bud

I was curious to see if they were actually dupes or not, so I swatched them side by side. I think they're pretty close, although they're not absolute dupes. But they are close, though, so very close.

Rock and Republic Spank vs Stila Bud

L-R: Stila Bud, Rock and Republic Spank

They're pretty much the same, but Spank is a little bit brighter than Bud, and also perhaps a little bit more cool-toned. But they are both muted neutral light pinks, so the similarity is pretty slight. I guess when you actually wear the colours on your cheeks, they're not going to look too different.

Quality-wise, both were good, although the Rock and Republic was more pigmented than the Stila, and also had a smoother texture. I'm not saying the Stila isn't good though, because it is, but Rock and Republic is better.

So which should you get, if you can only get one? Well, given that both colours are relatively close, I'm going to frame this as a quality vs price thing. Rock and Republic has the better quality, but Stila has the cheaper price. Both are good though, so at the end of the day, your choice could end up being decided by your budget.

Q&A; brushes, paint, is acrylic bad for your nails, dry time, others

THESE QUESTIONS WERE ASKED TO ME BY AN AWESOME QUESTION ASKER NAMED VICKI ------THANK YOU VICKI!
***sizes of your brushes, plus any other brush info you'd share ..... make, brand, type. What's your favs?
no favorites no sizes, i cut my brushes to size (i will have tutorial on that in less than two weeks, but to make a tutorial during christmas my busiest season on something that isnt art i am doing on my clients is very very hard......especially without a camera man zooming to really show the details. if you are just starting go to a craft store and get the smallest, longest, non-synthetic brush you can find....it will cost between 4-6 bucks......it will last you awhile and i do this in a pinch if my brushes are all acting up.

***paint, any brands you like? And especially, what is the consistency of your paint and what do you thin with?

i dont have a favorite. sometimes i need thin paint for what i am doing and sometimes thick, so i always go for a good solid color..one that isnt thick or thin..apple barrel is a great product, or folkart i think its called, but i have found paints at the dollar store and one of them was my favorite yellow i ever bought! hahah. what i do is mix water to thin them down, but they NEED to cover....(if you see a lot of separation on the top of the color when you first buy it, it sucks, dont buy it) you will forever be shaking that paint and it wont be a good coverage....;)

***more info on the powder pigments. these are so cool, but I know NOTHING about these

powder pigment means loose eyeshadow. you can buy them at any drugstore...they are the shiney glittery eyeshadows that come in the pot...this is for people who realllllllllly love pigments....i know people who can spot the name of a pigment across the room and if you can, its very very cool to have that infused into your nail art. i am serious about pigments because they are so blendable, but i wouldnt necessarily start out with pigments, it is not a MUST...it is an enhancement....i added them to my first tutorials because "I"  love them...and i want to show make up artists that i am going to show them how to add things like 'spiders' and 'snowflakes' to their make up looks and use pigments in my work and create overall effects .....its very exciting for me to do this.

***top coat recommendations

total long answer to this on my blog!!!! (where i am putting these questions!!!!) haha! scroll down

***brush cleaning suggestions

i will do this at length in my brush tutorial, but.....if you are using polish, clean with acetone...if you are using acrylics, clean with alcohol....these can be drying...oil your brush with an organic oil like olive oil.....(it goes into the hair...) as for synthetic, the same thing except....they start looking frazzled..you can clip and keep them in line by running them (wet) over a dry piece of soap and letting them sit overnight.

***do you paint with other paints besides acrylics

polish and glitter and pigments

***where do you get supplies

everywhere--- and i am not loyal to any brand.....i think if i get too comfortable using one thing, my nails will look like crap, i will get bored as hell and i will end up cleaning floors as a way out of my profession.....i buy weird stuff constantly and try new thing every. single. day. i buy from suppliers online and i also pick up things at beauty supply stores and craft stores if i am in a big city...... one buyer im loyal to is online on ebay, the screen name is "papi"...i have bought from them for years and never have they got my order wrong or made me wait a long time and i love that...its not a plug at all...just good service..however, they said if you mention me, i get a 10% discount....which is awesome for me....and you, since you will be learning from the new stuff i buy...lol

***you mentioned using alcohol ... to wipe off boo-boos? clean brushes?

if you make a mistake on a nail...say you start and your nails are freshly painted and you paint a giant acrylic star on the nail and it looks like crap.....you can spray that nail with alcohol..rub gently and the star  will come off without hurting the polish. this means......you cannot mess up.................its impossible to mess up.....everything you do can be erased and you can practice until perfect.....however, the second you add glitter polish or whatever..you are screwed, because alcohol doesnt erase that and you have a big glop of glitter on a nail with no star...hahahahahahaahh!!!

***answers to to any questions you think I should've asked!

i think you are a great question asker! i am going to put these up on my blog (link on my youtube) and you will help tons of girls and give me a reference point to send them to. everything you asked is definitely things i had planned on making.....but, seriously........i thought this too: if no one watched .....then, why waste time cutting brushes up? it takes a gigantic amount of effort.......and i still dont know exactly what people want to see most?learn most?know most? so i am winging it, so your questions kind of GUIDE ME through knowing people are watching and seeing what i am to do next to have made the baddest ass nail channel i can make......so thank you....:)

i hope my answers are clear, i think and type super fast and do not check over things....when i am rich and famous, the first thing im doing is investing in someone who is good at that and edits well!!! hahahahahahahahah

lovelovleove and thanks!!!

robin

***and Katie asks:

****1. is acrylic bad for your nails?
****2. how long does it take your designs to dry? same as regular polish??

ill answer 2 first. acrylic paint dries super fast....if you watch my tutorials, it dries before i can paint it fully sometimes and i have to add water.....so, to answer.....your polish is drying WHILE i am painting and then, essentially, you just wait for the top coat to dry...it is almost as if it dries FASTER (but you are putting time in designing the nails while polish dries) so, all and all, it takes the same amount of time as a regular polish/top coat.

question 1. is harder to answer. ive seen people DESTROY nails with acrylic............using a drill improperly and not nipping back properly, having a cuticle area left lumpy, or on the skin, or over the cuticle can really damage a nail. water mold is not too common and not damaging unless it is not taken care of immediately and sometimes, water DOES get trapped....but it is NOT very common. i say....if you get your nails done regularly and really attempt at keeping them nice.....have a manicurist who cares and does not hurt you...(acrylic application is not supposed to hurt)....if you have little lifting and go get them filled regularly then your natural nails grow underneath and do not break constantly......then, i would say NO they are not bad for your nails at all.........and they get a bad reputation because there are a lot of people who do not do a good and thorough job in application....acrylic nails have been around since the 70's and women still go every day and have them done...which means they WORK and women love them and they serve a purpose or else it would have died out years ago.....some women have horror stories about allergic reactions and bad manicurists, and horrible nail breaks---- and some have wonderful stories about how acrylic helped them to stop nail biting, made them have better self esteem, makes them feel renewed, transformed and has given them a higher quality of life!!!

so...i guess it is an individual experience based on the client and the person doing the work :) i hope this answers your question!! i am posting this comment to my blog because it rocks!!!  thank you for asking them and i hope this helps!

Maybelline Expert Wear Blush- Review

Hi ladies,

It's really good to be back. Now I'll continue writing more and more reviews and other posts on my blog coz it's really been a long time. These days my Internet connection is not working properly so I'm not able to comment on everyone's blogs but I promise that I'll get it repaired soon.

Anyways today's review is about a new Maybelline Expert Wear blush on which I bought recently. Shade: 95 Potpourri

As you can see that it's a dark pink shade which is a color that suits many of your dresses.

PRICE: Rs 209

Very reasonable as most of the Maybelline products are.

Gives a nice light glow to the cheeks.

It can suit even dark skin tones as well as light ones.

I like the applicator provided.

It's oil free.

The staying power is really impressive( 6-7 hours)

Available in many shades and I find Dusty mauve and Berry Sorbet lovely colors.

It's a nice product but not very pigmented.

But overall I liked this product and according to the price it's really impressive.

RATING: 3.5/5

So guys have to tried any of the Maybelline blushes?? Which shades have you used?

FOTD/Review Using an Asian Makeup Tip: Johnson's Powder Pure Essentials All Day Pink

One of the things I've noticed in my travels and experiences living abroad is that beauty tips are highly idiosyncratic, and I never fail to pick up beauty tips everywhere. I found out about using Monistat Anti-Chafing Gel as a primer from my awesome USA girls (although I was too chicken to try that out), and I learnt about the awesomeness of Sleek and Barry M from the lovely UK bloggers. And now that I'm in Asia, I've learnt another little tip that I thought I'd share with you.

I've been seeing a lot of Asian girls using a Johnson's body powder for their face. The full (and very long) name of this product is Johnson's Powder Pure Essentials All Day Pink. I don't know what it is with Asian products, but it seems like the longer the product name, the better. You know, like an eyeshadow isn't just an eyeshadow over here; it has to be XXX Brand Luminous Shiny Eyes Ultra Light Eye Powder With Pearl Reflector or something like that in order to sell :P

I get my bottle imported for awesomely cheap from Thailand, hence the Thai wording on the bottle. The lady who sold it to me swore that it was TEH AWESOMEZ as a face powder, even if it wasn't made as such. I was very dubious about it's qualities as a face powder, until I googled it and it seemed like she wasn't the only one using that Pure Essentials powder on her face.

The powder itself seemed adaptable for use as a face powder. The ingredients are simple and few - there are, in fact, a grand total of five ingredients (Talc, Dimethicone, Titanium Dioxide, Perfume, Iron Oxide) and all of them are found quite commonly in makeup items anyway, and nothing in the ingredients list seemed pore-clogging or irritating.

The powder itself is also pretty decent. It's finely-milled, and had a good texture. Maybe not as smooth as it could have been, but it wasn't a major issue with me. The only thing I was worried about was the colour. It was a shade of light pink, which could look potentially quite odd on my skin. However, the good thing about this is that because it's not actually meant as a face powder, the pink tinge in the powder doesn't really show up.

Here's a swatch of the powder on my skin. You can see that you need to really apply a lot before you get any major pink showing up. I do feel like this could still look ashy on more tanned girls, however. But for relatively fair girls (NC/NW20 and lighter, perhaps?), I think this would be fine.

And of course, the review wouldn't be complete without an FOTD showing how the powder looks on my face, so here's a shot of my face with the powder. Here, I mixed the Johnson's Pure Essential Powder with some of my own silica powder to give the powder better mattifying and oil-controlling properties, since the Johnson's All Day Pink Powder wasn't very mattifying on its own.

johnsons pure essential all day pink 3

This is just concealer and powder on my face. Here's the breakdown for anyone interested:
MAC Select Cover Up Concealer (spot applied on face)
MAC Studio Finish Concealer (spot applied on undereye area)
Johnson's Pure Essential All Day Pink mixed with Coastal Scents Silica Powder

I actually thought it looked pretty decent. Firstly, I was worried about the pink tinge in the powder, but when it was mixed with another transparent powder (the silica powder, in my case), it didn't leave a pink cast. I suspect that even if I had used it alone, it wouldn't have left a pink tinge either, since it was quite sheer colour-wise. Which brings me to my second point - don't expect this powder to provide any coverage or any skin-transforming properties. It's good as a basic powder, and that's it. I think this will be good for setting makeup or for people who don't need too much coverage.

So, if you're looking for a cheap, cheery basic powder that doesn't offer too much coverage, this is worth a go. If you're worried about the pink tinge, mixing with a clear powder, as well as a light hand, will help prevent the powder from appearing ashy on your face.

Holiday Eye Makeup Tutorial

I did this holiday inspired look using drugstore makeup.  It's not too dramatic, pretty wearable honestly.

 EYES:
  • NYX Eyeshadow Base - White
  • Wet N Wild Color Icon Palette (limited edition) - Sugar Plum Fairy
  • Wet N Wild Color Icon Palette (limited edition) - Night Elf
  • Wet N wild Color Icon Palette - Vanity
  • Physicans Formula Eye Definer Felt Tip Eyeliner - Black
  • Milani Liquif Eye Metiallic eye pencil - Black
  • Maybelline Colossal Volume Express Mascara - Blackest Black
LIPS:
  • Rimmel London Lipstick - Frosted

Here is the tutorial....

No more droopy lashes for me!! Mascara review

In a previous post of mine (I think before i headed to Rome) I pointed out how i despised wet or humid weather because my curled lashes would always droop and go back straight (I have dead straight lashes). Some people had pointed out to "use waterproof mascara", but I have before!! In the past, waterproof mascara had made my lashes go straight again, it wouldn't hold my curls.
But i decided to give it another try. As you all know if you have read my old posts, my now all time favourite mascara is "The colossal" by Maybelline; it gave my lashes a lot of volume and it held my curls amazingly well. So i decided to try the waterproof version:

Maybelline: The Colossal Waterproot formula

It's the same packaging as the normal mascara, but you can differentiate them by the shiny blue writing for the waterproof tube.
The waterproof mascara is amazing, it holds my lashes in place and it doesn't budge! I've tried this out for the past month now, it's been so rainy here in London so I had fun walking in the rain without an umbrella just to make sure the mascara works, people must have thought I was crazy for being so cheerful during such terrible weather! My lashes no longer droop when they get wet by the rain, hurray!

I don't think the mascara would cope in a humid condition though, I left it on through a shower and the steam made my lashes droop again. A bad point would be the mascara gives me no volume unlike the non waterproof one. In fact, it actually makes my lashes stick together. However, i have overcome this problem! First i would apply the non waterproof on and build up the volume, after i let that dry for 5seconds i put a quick layer of the waterproot formula to set my lashes, and it works like a dream =)

I took this after a full day of uni (university) and it had rained that day.

Applied non-waterproof formulae first, then the waterproof formulae, my lashes didn't stick together as much and it's rain proof!

I would give the waterproof mascara 4/5 because of the fact it doesn't give my lashes volume, but at least it's rain proof! You cannot imagine how happy i am that now i'm immune to the rain!
Oh and by the way, waterproof mascara is a b*tch to take off! Grr!

I'll take this opportunity to also review the Maybelline falsies mascara too, which is this one:

The brush is curved, i don't mind this brush, it's quite easy to use. You can see the slightest fibres on the brush.

This mascara is the fibre formula, you can see the tiny fibres on the brush which extends your lashes when applied to make them look longer like false eyelashes. My honest opinion? I didn't really see a difference, nor did i see much length change. Volume wise, it's not as great as the colossal. Don't expect this mascara to be anything like fiberwig! I'd give it 4/5 because the price is great (£6.99), it's fine as an ordinary mascara for everyday use, it does give a little volume, but it's nothing special.

So i think many of you must have given up reading a while ago (sorry for the long post!), but for those that stayed, thanks for reading all the way! I leave you with my new favourite necklace i made recently:

My hand-made adorable necklace. Don't forget to check out my jewellery shop here.

Lots of love! xX <3

A sea of purple

This look was a little bit more complicated than what I usualy do but I will explain it step by step.
I used Sally Hansen's Deep Purple from their Xtreme Wear collection as a base.  Like most of their polishes, it was very easy to apply, smooth, and opaque in 2 coats.
We are going to apply a tape diagonally to each finger and then use our base color to paint the nail.

Then, we are going to stamp our nail with a swirly design from image plate bm19 and a Silver Foil Nail Polish (Finger Paints Easel come, easel go).  Remove the tape carefully and slowly to protect your design.
Apply silver glitter to the line that divides your design and your naked nail with a fine brush.  I used Kiss Nail Art Paint in Silver Glitter.  If you are shaky like me, you need to do this slowly so you can get a straight line.  Finish it with a nice and glossy top coat, like Seche Vite.

After removing the tape
Apply a thin line of silver glitter and voila!

Nail Polishes that I used from start to finish!

I AM BACK!!

Hi lovely ladies!!
Hope everyone is fine....Just wanna inform you that I'm back. Actually it was my sister's marriage, so was very busy those days. Then I even went to Shimla & Jaipur to visit an old friend. All this was great fun & I enjoyed a lot. But the worst thing is that we were so busy that couldn't take proper pics also:((I returned day before but got very busy in settling down everything. Couldn't even comment on my favourite bloggers' posts and missed you guys a lot.Anyways I'm finally back and now got to resume my blogging. Will soon be back with some new products!!

ManGlaze Fuggen Ugly vs Orly Iron Butterfly: Dupes or Not?

Awhile back, I was gushing over ManGlaze Fuggen Ugly, the ubercool matte tar grey polish. I mentioned in the post that there were similar colours, so I thought I'd do a comparison post today swatching Fuggen Ugly side-by-side with one of its sisters, Orly Iron Butterfly.

Here are comparison swatches:

ManGlaze Fuggen Ugly Orly Iron Butterfly

L-R: First 2 fingers ManGlaze Fuggen Ugly, last 2 fingers Orly Iron Butterfly

As you can see, there are similarities and differences. The similarities are that both are matte, and have the same black-grey base. Both also apply very well, although I feel like Fuggen Ugly applies a bit better, because it goes on in thinner coats.

The differences are that Iron Butterfly has much bigger silver glitter than Fuggen Ugly. Fuggen Ugly isn't totally matte - there are very minute silver shimmer that adds a dimension to the colour, but the shimmer isn't visible on the finger, unlike in Iron Butterfly, where you can clearly see the discrete pieces of silver shimmer.

So, which one should you spring for? A lot is going to hinge on the shimmer for most people. If you want a more matte shade, then ManGlaze is the one to go for. But if you want some bling, then Orly's version will be your preferred choice.

Beauty Blog Backstage: Retro Urban Rainbow

Today's post is an interview with Rachael of Retro Urban Rainbow! She's got an awesome blog, as you'll discover from the interview:

1. What made you start your blog?
At the time I got laid off work and had all this extra time and nothing to do with it. It got me playing with my cosmetics more and doing my roommates makeup everytime we went out. A friend said to me "I like when you post your makeup on facebook." It was that statement I thought I should start my own blog!

2. Your blog features a lot of very vibrant, sometimes-bordering-on-almost-crazy makeup looks. Do you wear these looks out, or are they just for your blog or for experimentation?
When I first starting doing them, it was just for fun. But they quickly became a favorite of mine to create. I was never one to not be myself and I thought, what the hell...I'm wearing it out. I have gotten some weird looks in the past. For example when I went out for my friends birthday looking like Ke$ha in her "Take It Off" video the bartender asked me if he knew I had paint on my face. I just laughed. I'm crazy and have no limits! :)

3. You've written a very notable post regarding Marie Claire's article on the perception of larger-sized girls. Is this issue something you generally feel strongly about?
Sadly, not until recently this year. For the longest time I tried different diets and exercising. . I was ashamed of how I looked. And reading all those magazines growing up I just wanted to be a stick. That article lit a fire up under my ass to voice my opinion in the matter. I still workout, but I'm not hating on myself for being plus sized. Starting my blog actually changed my view on myself and seeing others like me out there all over the world. I know Marie Claire isn't and wont be the only magazine or person saying/feeling that way. Why should someone get away with making another feel badly about themselves?

4. What do you like best about blogging?
I love being able to vent, educate and ramble my opinion. It's also so amazing the people you can meet in the blogging community.

5. What do you like least about blogging?
It can be time consuming when your working and going to school all at once.

6. Are you more of a budget beauty, or a high-maintenance girl?
I'm high maintenance that is purely the truth! Lately I've been getting into indie brands, they cost less and sometimes have great products. But I'm true to Urban Decay, MAC and Chanel.

7. Lastly - I just HAVE to ask - any favorite beauty products you absolutely can't live without?
Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliners. It's the only eyeliner I use and I have it in all colors!

The White Stripes

This was the easiest manicure ever.  I really wanted to take off that fall manicure attempt that I had in my nails but didn't have much time, so I went for the easiest way out.  I stamped the striped design on bm20 on my naked nails with White Konad Special Polish and topped it with 2 coats of good ol' Seche Vite. I was done in no time, and got a lot of compliments!  The only thing that gave me a hard time, was  trying to get the thumbs right, because Bundle Monster plates are TINY so if you have long nails, or fat thumbs like me, you'll have to get a little creative.  I stamped twice, tried to make it as unnoticeable as possible and I think it looks alright. My husband said it reminded him of candy canes and that I should try it over red for Christmas… Well, maybe I will.  Meanwhile I hope you like my lazy, fast and uncreative manicure as much as me.

Fall

Sorry for the delay between posts, there's been TOO MUCH stuff going on in my life, but I am pretty sure you're not reading this blog to hear that, but to see some manicures… On with the nails!
I wanted to do a Fall or Thanksgiving inspired manicure but wasn't feeling so creative.  Also, I had just received some faux Konad image plates (Bundle Monster, 21 plates for 17 bucks) and I wanted to try them out.
As a base, I used Sally Hansen Laquer Shine in Glossy. A-ma-zing shade!  I've had this for a long time but I forgot about it, and trust me, Im glad I found it! It has the most perfect goldish burgundy shimmer to it. Once the light hits this baby, it just comes alive.
On top of it, I randomly stamped some leaves with Orly Luxe and White Konad Special Polish.
This is the final result.  I didn't really like it that much, I think it came out a bit matronly.
I hope you guys have a great Thanksgiving!

The final result
Sally Hansen Glossy.  Can you see the shimmer?

YSL Touche Eclat Swatches!

YSL Touche Eclat by now needs absolutely no introduction. It's one of the famous concealers of the world, and apparently works wonders on the undereyes, due to its luminous properties. Now I'm not sure if a simple click-pen of concealer is worth so much, but evidently tons of people do. So here are swatches! Unfortunately, my store didn't have the entire range, and they didn't stock the darkest colour. That makes me sad. But I hope this photo helps whoever might look at it!

01 Luminous Radiance is a light pink-toned beige.

02 Luminous Ivory is a light yellow-toned beige.

03 Light Peach is a warm orange-y tan shade.

If I'm not wrong, I've been told that pink counteracts brown eyebags, and yellow counteracts blue/purple undereye circles. I'm sure there are all sorts of theories, contradictory and otherwise, going on out there, but I believe that's the general rule of thumb if you're absolutely clueless and have no idea where to start. Of course it's not going to work 100% for everyone, but it's just a starting point, like all other makeup 'rules'.

To be fair, although I keep hearing complaints about how sheer Touche Eclat is, I didn't feel that they were really that sheer when swatching, although they definitely weren't as pigmented as some of the more pigmented products on the market. I guess if radiance is a main concern, and your undereye circles aren't too dark, and you don't mind the fiddly click-pen dispenser, this would be ideal.
